You are not starting with an empty canvas — you take a design that already works and change what matters to you: which numbers show up where, the accent colour, how big the time reads. That is why the results still look like watch faces rather than a pile of widgets.

Why a code instead of a file
Other browser builders compile a file you then have to sideload: plug the watch into a computer and copy the file into a folder by hand. It cannot be done from a phone at all. Here the face comes from the Connect IQ Store like any other app, and the code only carries your settings — so the whole thing works from the phone already in your pocket, and nothing breaks when Garmin tightens up sideloading.
The trade-off is honest: a code can only carry choices the face already knows how to render. That rules out your own photo as a background — but it is also what keeps every result looking deliberate. See the FAQ if you are weighing this up.
